Honoring our Fallen Turtles
In the spirit of camaraderie and remembrance that defines the Turtle Club, we are proud to announce the Annual McGowan Memorial Service, a heartfelt tribute to our beloved members who have journeyed to the Great Pond in the Sky.
The inception of this poignant event was inspired by a touching interaction early in 2023. A woman, whose husband was a long-standing Turtle, reached out to our community in her time of loss. Her simple request – to have her husband’s name etched in our memories – sparked a profound idea: the establishment of a memorial service to honor our departed Turtles.
This initiative found a guiding light in one of our Imperial Council members, a retired bishop, who graciously volunteered to preside over the service. It became evident that this ceremony would be more than a mere act of remembrance; it would be a celebration of lives well-lived and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Turtles.
The choice of January 23 for the memorial holds special significance. Research into the life of Captain Hugh P. McGowan, one of the founding members of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles, revealed this date to be connected with his legacy. Thus, January 23 was unanimously chosen to mark our Annual McGowan Memorial Service, commencing in 2023.
The inaugural event, led by our Imperial Chaplain, Jason Sanderson, was a moving requiem service honoring not only Captain McGowan but all our cherished Turtles who have passed. It was a solemn yet uplifting ceremony, embodying the values of fun, fellowship, and high morals that we uphold.
As we continue this tradition, we invite members to contribute names of fellow Turtles for inclusion in future services. This Roll of Honor will serve as a perpetual reminder of the joy, laughter, and unwavering commitment to camaraderie each Turtle brought into our lives.
In closing, we reflect on the words of the Turtle Creed – to be bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, fearless, and unafraid. As we remember our fallen comrades, let us carry forward their legacy with pride and continue to make the Turtle Club a beacon of fellowship and joy.
